Monday was a dreary, blustery, wet day in Virginia Beach. It dampened our enthusiasm for visiting multiple locations. We went through the Hampton Bridge Tunnel, a smaller version of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel. Our first stop was at First Landing State Park. This was the first location where the Jamestown settlers landed before eventually setting their colony at Jamestown Virginia.

The park is more of a hiking and camping location although there was a educational display about the landing and the ships. We took the slow route along the ocean. We passed the older resort area, the military base area, and then the modern, fancy resort area. This section of Virginia is loaded with military bases. In addition, there seem to be multiple military museums in every town of substantial size.

Since it was not a great day for hiking, we chose not to. We turned around and heading back to Williamsburg. The evening dinner was a very nice restaurant called the Jefferson. Their stuffed boneless pork chops were excellent.

2013 Trip Three, NM and VA, April 21

A short post this morning. Yesterday was Sunday and a day of rest. You all were in church, right?

The Marriott timeshare is very nice and we slept in also. Chris was able to read the Sunday New York Times, a rarity for her.

Most of the afternoon was spent at the VA Living Museum. Originally a project of the Junior League and Rotary, it morphed into a organization based on the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum to show the varied and diverse ecosystems and animals of VA. With the coast, the plains and the mountains, VA is a good state to utilize this concept.

There was an interesting display of home designed bird houses.

While not high-powered, the time was well spent. It should help orient us as we travel around this week.

Thinking back, it has been an interesting couple of months learning about early history of the US. We have been in Santa Fe with the Spanish-Mexican heritage. We have visited St. Augustine, another early founding city. This area represents the first Engligh landing on the continent, as well Revolutionary War (Yorktown being the final major battle) and Civil war battles. Finally, we were able to learn first hand of the settling and Americanization of Hawaii.

Enjoy your day.

2013 Trip Three NM and VA; April 20

So this is a two day post. Friday the 19th was a drive day without much excitement. We left eastern Tennessee and made it to Richmond VA. Our original plans were to spend Thursday night in Cherokee North Carolina. However, Chris spotted that the road over the Great Smoky mountains to Cherokee was closed due to a landslide. It was not to open until mid-May. We adjusted our Thursday night plans and spent the night in Dandridge Tennessee.

The drive over the Great Smoky Mountains was very scenic. The roads satisfied my desire for curvy, up-and-down road. We were surprised by the width of the Great Smoky Mountains as they lasted much longer into North Carolina than we expected coming from the west. We were in and out of the rain for most of the morning but by noontime we were ahead of the heavy showers which hit Richmond late that evening.

At the Virginia State Capitol

At the Virginia State Capitol

We started Saturday morning by visiting the Virginia State Capitol. The docent gave an excellent tour. The capital was designed by Thomas Jefferson. It was the first new seat of government designed after the American revolution. The US Capitol in Washington DC may have been based on it.

The recent movie “Lincoln” was filmed extensively in this building and in the city of Petersburg. During the Civil War, this building housed both the Virginia legislature and the Confederate Congress.

We followed this up with a tour of the Tredegar Ironworks. This is a national historical monument along the James River in downtown Richmond. The displays here discussed the two battles of Richmond in 1862 and 1864 as well as the role that the foundry played in manufacturing Confederate cannon and ammunition.

After a walk along the James River, we attempted to find a place for lunch. Our efforts at two different locations proved fruitless. Long waits and lack of parking were the main difficulties. We ended up driving to Williamsburg and checking into our timeshare. This will be our location for the next week as we travel to various cities in the area.

Sorry Minnesota, it is very green here.

2013 Trip Three, NM and VA, April 18

We could not resist. We had started the day just west of Memphis in Arkansas. I-40 was nice enough. The trees were blooming, the topography was interesting (eastern US mountains), the truck traffic was pleasantly challenging as they passed one another slowly going up the hills, and the wind was strong but no more than we had been used to from NM and the last few days. (The Weather Channel has been on 24/7 “storm mode” for the tornado possibilities in OK through IL, winter storm Yogi blowing from CO through the Twin Cities to the UP of Michigan but we have been lucky enough so far to be between various storm systems.)

So we took an adventure, or as Chris calls it, an alternate route. We were about 40 miles shy of Knoxville heading for Dandridge which is east of Knoxville. We made a semi-circle around Knoxville to the south on curvy, hilly 2 lane roads, going through small towns, past Tennessee Valley Authority dams and lakes, through the foothills of the Great Smokies.

The ride was pleasant, We did not get lost. We did not have enough time to take a hike though. Sarah was kind enough to send us a picture of snow in St. Paul so we sent her back a picture of green mountains in TN. The dogwood are starting to bloom, eastern red bush are coming out.

The area seemed prosperous. Homes were solid and well tended, less vacant commercial buildings. Small town Americana-we even got behind a school bus discharging its kids, frequently two to three per house, once with the kids’ dog running out to meet them as the bus drove up.

View of Great Smokies from Foothills Parkway

The end of the drive brought us back to reality as we drove through Pigeon Forge TN, home of Dolly Parton shows, mini-golf, large hotel complexes, huge billboards advertising one thing or another. (Lady Bird Johnson’s efforts to rid American highways of billboards were long ago and evidently not effective.)

So, today is on to Richmond. Don’t know if we will try another alternate route. If we are lucky, Saturday will not have rain and we can explore the town a bit before we land in Williamsburg.

We had planned to spend much of August visiting KY and TN but a few weeks ago we dropped that idea in order to spend more time in the Canadian Rockies and WA state. I guess we will have to visit them next spring when Knoxville holds a dogwood festival showcasing the dogwood blossoms and garden tours.

2013 Trip Three, NM and VA, April 17

April 17, 2013

GREEN!!! Yes, we entered the land of the green today. As we approached central and eastern Oklahoma, we saw evidence of growing plants and trees. At least in the part of Oklahoma along the I-40 corridor, the drought seems to be lifting.

We tried to be adventurous today and took a slight detour just to break up the day slightly. The Maps program Apple includes on the iPad showed a OK state park just off I-40. It was on a peninsula jutting out into a lake and offered easy off and on access back to the interstate. It was called Fountainhead State Park.

Lake Eufaula in OK

Lake Eufaula in OK

Well, (we did not have Buddy on while we were driving) as we got off I-40 the sign said Lake Eufaula State Park. I got a little nervous but we took the road anyway. Turns out (from the nice lady at the visitor center to the park) that the park’s name changed several years ago. So we were in the right place but technology had screwed up.

We bought some postcards and asked her about a place to have an early lunch. She suggested the cafe at the marina down the road. Well, not quite like the casino location of yesterday, but the fish smell (they sell bait, etc), the lack of any customers, the one person staffing the bait shop/cafe etc made us decide to pass on this opportunity.

Where we did not have lunch

Where we did not have lunch

Instead we went to June’s cafe in downtown Checotah whose motto is Love, Peace and Chicken Grease. reasonable food, decent prices. There is a casino in Checotah but we passed on it.

Back on the road we entered Arkansas. First time ever for both of us. By this evening we have traversed across most of the width of the state. It is even greener that OK, has water in its rivers and lakes, and has much more varying topography. Hilly in the west, agricutural flat in the east. I know, minor, but after dry NM it was nice to see.

image

Dinner was at another local restaurant, Ole Sawmill Cafe. Buffet for $9.50. I tried more of the southern style vegetables than Chris did. Forrest City, where we are staying, calls itself the Jewel of the Delta. A good part of eastern Arkansas is called the delta, I believe because of both the Mississippi River and two other rivers in the region. The part of town which we explored needs the jewel to be polished a bit better. We must have missed the brighter part of town. That can happen when you explore only part of an area.

It has been a few years since we really did a major road trip. Oklahoma roads were somewhat busy but the roads in Arkansas (which Chris drove primarily) were much more heavily used. Truck traffic reminded us of the heavy volume we used to see around Carlisle (PA, there is a Carlisle, AR as well as in 12 other states).

Tomorrow, we traverse Tennessee.

2013 Trip Three, NM and VA, April 16

Prologue from Jude:
Ed and Chris now leave as they arrived five weeks ago — on their silver Saturn steed. I can’t describe how grateful I am for their help in getting me through post surgery recovery. I have now graduated to independent living, able to bathe and dress myself, and I am well stocked with provisions. Their job done, it’s away with a “Heigh Ho, Silver Saturn” and off to their next adventure. God bless you. Adios.

April 16, On the road again. Well, it is goodbye to New Mexico. So long mesas and buttes. So long red black brown and gray colors, along with some green juniper and pine. So long to attractively decorated highway underpasses with color and symbols. So long to mountain vistas and snowcapped peaks. So long to beautiful sunsets. We did not get up for too many sunrises.

Hello to flatlands. Hello to initial views of green grasses and trees. We will be driving on interstate 40 for several days. A portion of interstate 40 parallels the famous route 66.

Just outside of Amarillo Texas, we saw Cadillac Ranch. This is a location where ten Cadillacs are buried facedown into the ground. We were not sure if they were fancily painted or if just a series of graffiti artist have applied their paint to the cars.

For dinner, we thought a wise move would be to have buffet dinner at an Oklahoma Indian casino. After all, casino equals buffet. Right? Wrong. The casino in Clinton Oklahoma was small, very smoky, and the eating area consisted of an area you would find set-aside at your local supermarket. We did not dine at the casino and went outside to air out our jackets.

Instead, we continued another 15 miles to Weatherford Oklahoma where we are staying the evening. We had dinner at a local diner. The food was plentiful, tasty, and inexpensive. However, I am sure it was not organic or local sourced food.

Our dining habits are not fancy. We have booked lodging in Vancouver British Columbia for the end of July through airbnb. We emailed the host and asked permission to later this summer include our comments about her location on our travel blog. She was happy with that and directed us to a recent visitor to her apartment who had a travel blog also. Their travel blog was very detailed about the locations where they ate and how the food was prepared. I think their restaurant locations are at least two stars higher than ours.

2013 Trip Three, NM and VA, April 15

Last night with Jude. We have stocked up on supplies and prepared meals. She had her first formal PT today. She has progressed extremely well and with some advance preparation, she is well positioned to advance further after we leave. Plus, Michele is coming down for a week starting Saturday and nancy and sally may be coming in mid May.

Her computer person came out to see her and filmed her at her desk starting to use Dragon Naturally Speaking for voice recognition on her computer. See the video at thecomputerg.wordpress.com

On our last days we made a visit to the Museum of Spanish Colonial Art in Santa Fe. Much of the art is religious focused. It is a small museum so we went for a walk along another section of the Dale Ball trails by St. John College. We went back and picked up Jude and had dinner at Il Vicino restaurant.

A few days earlier we had gone walking along the Calabasas trail north of Santa Fe, part of another extensive network of hiking, biking and equestrian trails here.

Tomorrow we head out for VA and should arrive at Williamsburg Saturday. We are only doing about 500 miles per day and plan to tour Richmond VA Saturday before we end up in Williamsburg.

Next week is Garden Week in Virginia and we will be touring gardens in Norfolk, Richmond, VA Beach and the Middle Peninsula along with other sites. It should be quite a change from the dry, desert and mountainous area around Santa Fe. The spring winds continue with consistent winds over 20 mph on a frequent basis. New Mexicans talk about having low pollution but they seem to not consider dust storms and grit in the air as pollution. But the views are frequently seen through a dust haze that minimizes the beauty of the area.

2013 Trip Three, New Mexico and Virginia, April 12

April 12
Sounds weird, New Mexico and Virginia in the same trip. Well we are a little unusual. Part one of this trip is coming towards an end. Tuesday April 16 we head out across country to Virginia.

This is 30 days worth of precipitation. Not much.

This is 30 days worth of precipitation. Not much.

We have done a few more small trips. We drove down to Bernalillo and visited the Coronado State Monument. It is the location where Coronado met the people of Kuaua Pueblo. The pueblo was abandoned a few decades after Coronado swept through. WPA workers in the 1930s uncovered one of the best examples of kiva mural art which was removed and many of the murals are on display in a separate building. (No pictures allowed.) The ruins remain underground since excavation has proven to be unable to preserve them, only reproductions exist to demonstrate location and size.

Today we hiked a new trail on the north side of Santa Fe. The city and county have a very nice set of well marked and maintained trails. The weather got up in to the 60s so the hike was quite pleasant. Mountain views are all around.

2013 Trip Three, New Mexico and VA, April 9

Rio Grande from White Rocks

Rio Grande from White Rocks

Valles Caldera

Valles Caldera

First of two Gilman tunnels

First of two Gilman tunnels

We have not seen measurable precipitation since March 12 while driving through Minnesota and Iowa. Snow was supposed to be falling in some of the higher elevations today but not around Jude’s house. We have, however, seen blowing dust frequently and beautiful sunsets.

Last Friday we drove to Los Alamos New Mexico, the Los Alamos national laboratory. Since the laboratory is not open to outsiders, we visited the Bradbury science Museum in the downtown area. The museum focuses not only on the atomic bomb but the many other accomplishments of the laboratory. We increased our scientific knowledge immeasurably.

Sunday we drove the Jimez mountains scenic byways. We stopped at white rocks overlook observing the Rio Grande canyon. We took a van tour of the 89,000 acre Valles Caldera preserve. While home to a herd of 1500 elk, they were all hiding in a different part of the preserve from where we were. The caldera was formed by one of three US super volcanoes but is not currently considered an active volcano. Our tour focused more on the grasslands at 8500 foot elevation which have been ranched since the 1800s.

Our drive on the Jimez Mtns byway continued with stops at Battleship Rocks, Jemez Springs and the Gilman tunnels. The tunnels cut through beautiful red rocks and were constructed to enable logging in the area.
THe scenery was beautiful even if dry. We have seen flowers and trees blooming in the Albuquerque area but it is slow to show itself at this higher elevation. Forests of aspen are still without leaves.

Note: The title of trip three has been modified to reflect that we will be driving directly to VA to catch up with what would have been Trip 4, the Chesapeake Bay trip.

Ed April 9, 9:30 pm

Update Wed AM.
Well Mother Nature decided if St. Paul was supposed to receive 4-6 inches of snow then we should at least get a light dusting. Overnight there was enough snow so we can see it but certainly less than an inch.

2013 Trip Three, New Mexico, April 4

Well it is Thursday April 4 and we are in Santa Fe. Jude is recuperating from surgery; we are continuing to provide ongoing assistance.

As time progresses, we have made a few side trips. Today was our longest. After number of errands, we drove to the Santa Fe ski area. The ski area was still in use although the crowds were not heavy. The base of the ski area is at 10,000 feet in elevation. The lifts go up another 2000 feet. We did not ski.

We did look at the ski shop. Despite the 40% savings, we did not buy the ski jackets. List price was $785.

We stopped at the picnic area at a lower elevation which did have snow. We whipped out our portable tablecloth and ate our peanut butter and jelly sandwiches in the cold.

We drove back towards Santa Fe. At a lower elevation, probably about 7500 foot, we went for a hike. Here the high desert vegetation was juniper and rock. The hike lasted about 1 1/2 hours and was warm enough to take off the sweatshirts. The Hawaii Haleakala sweatshirt did come in handy at the higher elevations.

Last Thursday, March 28, we visited the Georgia O’Keefe Museum in downtown Santa Fe. It was a pleasant experience but not overwhelming. It is pretty small. Maybe we will be able to visit Ghost Ranch or other locations in the future.

We squeezed in a hamburger/hot dog and malt at Burt’s Burgers, a local, not fancy institution and our orders were taken by a woman with a Science Museum of Minnesota shirt. She has been in Santa Fe for a long time, though. The malt and food were great.

Earlier this week, we hiked at a petroglyph site (La Cieneguilla) not far from Jude’s house. The drawings here were much more visible than previous ones we observed in Minnesota.

image

Wednesday while Jude was in a meeting, we stopped at a small shop in El Dorado that had very interesting items. We purchased a book for us that creatively discussed the pleasures of staying at home after traveling for years. THe husband of the husband and wife store was from Waterbury CT where Chris went to high school.
